This place has two things working for it - it's location and their bar. I've come here several times in the last few years with my wife and we always enjoy going to their bar to have a few drinks. The restaurant provides old bread that you can feed to the fish and birds outside - it's always been a fun and relaxing highlight to our vacation when we're in the area. Through all of our visits there we've only had two different bartenders and both of them were extremely fun and friendly to hang around with - even with them running food orders out to tables they have always been great to us and made a special effort to make us feel welcome. Their mix drinks are good and stiff; some can be a bit sweet but I always feel like I've gotten my moneys worth in this area. A good selection of beer on tap as well. We did try their restaurant for the first time a few months ago and the food side of things didn't go so well... Completely opposite of the bar staff our waiter seemed like he was barely trying - we asked several questions about the menu he couldn't answer and made no attempt to find out the answer to. I asked him what was in the Gator Andoulie sausage and he replied "I don't know, I mean, there could really be anything in there." Thanks dude. Solid sell. I ended up getting the fried catfish with green beans and mashed potatoes. The catfish was bland and lacked any seasoning. The sides were good but were such a small part of the meal it didn't really make up for it. I guess I should've gone with the mystery sausage. My wife got the blackened catfish which she said also lacked seasoning. We were both pretty unimpressed with the food. For the quality the menu is a bit pricey. After we ate we went and had a few drinks at the bar - the bar tender single-handedly salvaged the service experience for us. The building seems like it's lacking in a few updates, mainly that several stalls in their bathrooms have been consistently out of order over the last few years of going. My advice is eat somewhere else, come here for drinks afterwards and hang out with the nice bartender. Then ask for some bread to go party with the birds and fish to enjoy the view.

Ugh.... Don't come to this tourist trap. Good location completely wasted on bad food. You get to feed the fish while you eat but the fish have it easy, they just get thrown bread and don't get a check after.

Folks, take it from one of the vast majority of St. Augustine locals who would not even consider eating at Santa Maria. Without exception, this "restaurant," as any local foodie would tell you, has the best location and the absolute worst food in St. Augustine - in a tourist town with more than its share of bad restaurants . In fact, the locals hold their breath each year when the nor'easters blow in and hope that one of them will take this place out and a quality restaurant will replace it.

This restaurant was unique for sure. First the good points. Where ever you sit in this restaurant you can see out to the water and all the boat. The food was amazing. I ordered the stuffed shrimp, wasn't really stuffed, just had the crab meat on top of the shrimp, but whatever it was ssoooo good. It comes with two sides and two good sized hush puppies. All really yummy. They bring you a basket of bread that you can feed the birds with. It's actually really cool, they have little openings on the window ledge that you put your hand out and feed the birds. That's great because the birds are on the other side of the window and it's a win win for everyone. Now the bad.... The whole restaurant is uneven, from the floors to the doors to the table. Can be tricky to eat at. Next we ordered sangria, wasn't good at all. We each took a sip and sent it back. Guess if the drinks aren't all that good you won't drink much and will be able to walk out of the restaurant. Or maybe if your drunk you can counteract the whole restaurant lean. I would go back for the food for sure.

I suppose it's all about the location here. It's really hard to not like a waterfront restaurant. Scenery that is. The food well hmmm??? The place it has a very rustic maritime feel too it. Literally! Anyways. I had a simple lunch chicken tenders and surprisingly enough they where decent. Tasty and I had them tossed in pepper sauce to give them a kick! Others in my group had problems. Poultry seemed to be the issue. Everything seemed under cooked and pink. The problem was quickly corrected but always check the meat first. I'd explore other dining options personally but I wouldn't rule out stopping on in here for some hush puppies and a beer.

Great location, average food. I expected more from the menu due to its location. Food tasted okay, nothing to whistle and tell your friends back home about. A tourist trap!!!! The only thing going for this place is they do have quite a selection of beers on tap. Good stuff. Surprisingly for a party of five, this place did not charge "Gratuity Tax". That is why I at least gave it a 2 star. If they did, it would have been way less.

This restaurant is on the sea and the main atraction is a basket of bread they give you for you to feed the seagulls

Location, location, location!!! Unfortunately that's all they have going for them now days. This used to be an awesome restaurant with a huge menu. People used to wait outdoors just to get in. On our recent visit we walked right in, sat down, & there was only one other table of patrons there. The menu had very little with large prices. Sure the experience of feeding fish while you eat is fun for the kids, but hardly worth it when the menu is so disappointing. I really wish I could have given a better review. I miss the old Santa Maria.

Not too impressed with the old Santa Maria. It's situated at the end of a dock next to the municipal marina, so the location is pretty cool. You can look out over the Matanzas River from a few places in the restaurant. When you walk in from the bright sunlight you will notice that it's dark in here and it kind of smells like my gym locker. We had a boat tour to get to, so we just went to the bar for a quick bite and a drink. The menu is expensive and the food is pretty low quality. I'd expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 a beer, $9-15 for an app and $15-20 for even a small entree. I wanted oysters but $15/doz seemed kind of high. The bar was sticky, and the drinks were just ok. I had a long island in a mason jar which was really sugary and not as strong as you would expect and a local brew. The chowder was ok. I think this could be a really cool place because of the location, but it needs some help.

Campy tourist restaurant. The food is neither good or bad. You can feed the fish from your indoor table through covered slots. The interior smells musty and looks cluttered...straight out of a John Candy movie. All that was missing was a guy in a pirate costume waiting on our table.

  • Ellen H.

The view was nice and feeding the birds was interesting. The decor was dark. The service was horrible, he couldn't remember my order from 3 feet away and then offered to get me a bowl of spinach to compensate. He meandered up to the table with hoodie on "you figure it out" he says when taking our order! Not going back nor recommend.

This place has edible food. Nothing to write home about, but a good place to stop in with kids before going on the pirate adventure next door. You can also feed the birds and fish through little holes in the window sill.

  • Kheely R.

This place is underwhelming. The best parts about this place is the location and being able to feed the fish at your table. The food though was overpriced and not good. I had the crab stuffed mushrooms which weren't bad they just weren't anything special. My boyfriend had the chicken parm which had no flavor, something I could have made better at home. Our server was nice she was kinda shy but did her job. This place was a let down. If they got their good right and modernized the place they would be making a serious killing at the location they are at.

I would leave no stars if I could, because we never got service. Walked in at peek hours when the streets were popping with music and tourist enjoying dinner... Rude hostess grabbed menus and began walking... Never said "follow me" or welcomed us in any way. Pretty much seemed put out we even walked in. She slammed our menus down, and walked off. 20 minutes later my husband and I walked out the door... Very sad, my husband and I were celebrating our 2nd anniversary and reliving our honeymoon dinner but feared what the food would be like with this service so we left. Sad. Don't see them being around much longer.

Have been there 3 times the food was excellent. Took one group of 16 and the group ordered a variety of items and everyone was pleased. I personally like the fish sandwich and my hubby likes the coconut shrimp. This restaurant is a treasure on Matanza bay. The tables are next to the windows so everyone has a great view. There are also ledges in the windows & they all have a door. After you order, the server will bring you a basket of bread and you can open the door and feed the fish and the birds.

This restaurant has the best view in St augustine right on the water, but that is all it has going for it. They bring you stale bread so you can feed the fish through little windows. Unfortunately the fun ate most if my food also. The service was very slow and the waitress was not attentive at all. The food was overpriced and did not taste very good. The rest rooms were dirty and it seems like like a big tourist trap. I will not be back. I don't waste your money.

I wish to god that I had read the Yelp reviews of this place before going there! Crap! It was BAD! BAD, BAD! This restaurant is in such a fantastic location that it is so unbelievable that the food could be so BAD! Did I say it was BAD? The outside looks like a lovely place out over the water to have a bite to eat. The interior looks and smells like it has been at the bottom of the ocean for many, many years. I was just a little concerned walking out over the boardwalk that I was going to fall thru, but unfortunately didn't pay attention to my instincts to run! The highlight of the evening was feeding the freakishly large amount of, what looks like catfish, from the little trap doors next to your table. The food was so bad, that I just flung the entire contents of our plates in the ocean. (At the suggestion of one of the busgirls)...she said "yeah, just throw it all in there, they will eat it". So, I did. For starters we had the crab stuffed mushrooms that came to our table it seemed like even before we were done saying "crab stuffed mushrooms". So, that explained why there were cold and pretty gross. They were not the small button mushrooms filled with crab, but three huge mushrooms stuffed with stuffing. I then had the stuffed grilled shrimp that were luke warm and pretty much tiny shrimp with more heaping piles of that stuffing on top of them. They looked like they had been cooked last week and maybe set over a candle flame to heat them up. My mom had shrimp skewers that had also been left out for about a week before passing them over that candle flame, but they were extremely dry on top of the coldness. The hushpuppies were big and soggy in the middle and the salad looked like someone had tried to cut it up, but their knife wasn't sharp enough, so they just gave up. I have to say the baked sweet potato was actually hot....so I'm not sure, but maybe the only thing they can fit in their oven are sweet potatoes....everything else gets the old candle flame. To add to the ambiance, was the unique smell of an old musty shoe. If you are not put off by bad food, foul smell and the freakishly large catfish, then maybe the scores of pigeons and seagulls begging for the bread/food you are throwing in that hole will turn you off. Please do St. Augustine a favor and close this place down! OH, lest I forget, the cost of our disgusting meal was $60! For two people! Not only am I pissed the food was so bad, but I'm pissed that I could've really had a great meal somewhere else for half the price. Our poor waitress...no wonder she was dressed like a hobo...maybe people never tip her because they cannot afford to after paying for the awful food.

I had lunch here with my Aunt and have to say, I was very judgmental when we walked in- the dining area is in dyer need of some updating and I was creeped out by the seagulls, BUT, the food was delicious and I would go back if in the area again, but not during a rush- we lucked out and had a corner mostly to ourselves so the bird yelping was kept to a minimum. And to the negative reviews about the chicken fingers- you don't go to a SEAFOOD restaurant and order chicken fingers. Or chicken. Or anything that lives primarily on land. End rant. -A

I have lived in Jacksonville my whole life and consider myself a semi local in St.A; I was wondering why I had never eaten there because it's a pretty cool location. We walked in a turned around. It smells like a stinky old antique store. And it looks like a very crapy cruise ship. I can't believe with an A+ view there wouldn't be balcony seating all the way around! Restaurant impossible needs to visit them for a makeover!

I ate there several years ago, I was offended by the over cooked, dry, over seasoned with Pepper Grouper and it tasted as if it was at lest 2 days old... Not including time on boat, shipping, but setting in the kitchen 2 days old. I sent it back, with explanation, informing the chief of the above expectation. and what grouper should be. I received 30 minutes later the very best grouper I ever had. The chief came out and asked me what I thought. I told him how grate it was, the skin, crispy lightly salted and seasoned bring out all the flavor, the flesh was most and you could taste the sea in every bit, you did not have to see it to know it is grouper. Most of all is was cooked perfectly, not under done or over, not always easy to get it right on, food continues to cook after it is plated, this is the most challenging part of perfect sea food. He was very pleased, explain everything to me from going to the pre down fish market...... To an insight on how he looks at the tourist customer. He was right in many ways. The insulting part was he keeps the fresh good grouper for a few customers that know fish, the tourists he gives the older fish, still good but not as good. The price they were charging was for really good grouper. Residents, I understand totally of avoiding it. If this is the same chief, as I had, he has had the sole ripped from him, by people that do not know good fish. Today, the FOODIE bar has been raised, there is no excuse for bad sea food. When ordering, tell the waitress/waiter, you are not a dry lander, you know fish. I demanded I get what I pay for. They were when I was there reasonably priced for the Grouper (I happen to know the price per pound to the fisherman at the time). When I was there the foodie movement was only a few years old.......!

Santa Maria is a restaurant that is off the pier. You get a really close view of the ocean and marine life. You also get a basket of bread to feed the birds with so it's a pretty entertaining meal (well, until you run out of bread). We got plenty of great photos from this place! Food: 1) Blackened tilapia with vegetable medley and green breans: The fish was really good. Well seasoned, great flavor and good consistency. I really enjoyed the fish. The vegetable medley...a couple of raw broccoli, cauliflower and carrot slices...not that appealing. I had to smoother it with cocktail sauce to get any sort of flavor out of it. And with all places that I ordered food from in the "south"...the green beans all tasted straight from the can. 2) Pearl Harbor: this drink was nice and sweet, super fruity, can't really even taste the alcohol...just the way I like it :) 3) Chocolate and peanut butter pie: In a nutshell, it's a recess peanut butter cup but in pie form.......it was delicious :) Service: Our waitress was super nice and really friendly! She even made it an effort to come by and point out some dolphins that she spotted around the pier to us! Super nice gal! She's a great-grandmother and still working! She's amazing! Ambiance: Think of where spongebob square pants lives, minus the pineapple, and that's what the inside of santa maria looks like. It's really marine, seamen, ship based decor. Since you are right off the pier, you are really close to the marine life, especially since you can open these wooden compartments to throw bread outside to feed the birds. It's a nice place to sit down and enjoy your meal with the accompaniment of the beautiful ocean. Price: Decent for seafood and off the pier view. The meal came out to be almost $60, but we did order two seafood entrees, and two drinks and a dessert. Overall: I would not come back for the food, but I would come back for the view and to feed the birds.

Hmm...not what I was expecting. Prices were high, hostess was not happy, food was not good. Ordered the seafood platter and everything on it was fried. Very irritated. Can't really blame the restaurant for the FRIED seafood platter....it was clearly on the menu and I failed to read it. Still...the bad hostess and food options still make it a 2 star in my book.

Just had appetizers and drinks here. The location is ok...on the water; however, the ambience is severely lacking. It reeks of musty thrift shop, and everything seemed dated and dusty. The bathrooms were not well- kept, and we were one of the first customers! We ordered $8 Bloody Mary's, which had a good amount of vodka, but the mix tasted very bland. We also ordered calamari, which was $12, but the portion was dismal and the taste was even worse! Very fishy. The fried mozzarella was tasty, but that's about the only good thing I can say, unfortunately. If you want to eat on the water, go somewhere else!

Saturday May 17th 2014 Dinner ended at 1830 roughly. We had a very slow experience with our waitress Megan. Everything was slow drinks, apps, bread, food. The check. Start to finish this was just not a great experience. Chelsea and I visited the Santa Maria an we enjoyed our visit in the past so we brought in some out of state relatives to enjoy the atmosphere an the best part feeding the fish. The food was great everything but the service. An you couldn't blame it on being too busy. Are server had at most 4 tables. When the check came granted we had somebody who was going to pay for our meal over the phone. An we let the store know that. But once that wasn't happening we informed Megan an said we need our check to pay. We sat waiting for 20 mins after we were done boxed the food. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting. For the check. So we decided let's go to the front by the hostess an request our check we stood up there between 10-15 mins waiting for a check watching our server making weye contact with us knowing were trying to leave. An even one of the hostess even walked up an said they want to pay an leave. So I requested for a manager he came promptly told him the situation he was prompt to have the waitress bring us the check. No biggie no fowl language was said we were just tried of waiting an wanted to leave. Anyways im done ranting about that. It's a great visit for the view. But we won't be returning. Also the hostess were polite an helpful, but train Them not to say "I hate America". Especially when they don't know Active duty Military are standing next to them. At that moment I was going to walk away an not pay for my food. You have a job be thankful for that.

I can admit, I got suckered into coming here as a tourist. But I can also admit that it made the rest of my trip wonderful (read on for more details). This place is awful. I mean AWFUL. The staff are weird, there is no other way to describe it, they're just weird. This place is more "Truck stop restaurant in Kansas while you wait to fill'er up" than "Pier restaurant with great seafood". Seriously, you're out in the water, and I can still get better seafood at my Cap'n D's 300 miles from the beach. There is no excuse, this place is run down. The decor is straight out of Magnum PI (read 80's beach chic?), and the place just looks and feels dirty. The waitress we had was quite uninterested in her job, and us. And then there is the food... You would be better off going to Wal-Mart, hitting the frozen aisle, stocking up on fried seafood there, and taking it back home to cook it in the oven. Do this, and I guarantee you end up with a better meal and experience, it's that bad. Feeding the fish is fun for about 2-3 minutes, the rest of the time you just want to get the hell outta there. The salad looked old, brown edges, etc. The shrimp and scallops had zero flavor, unless you think cardboard is a flavor. The bright side is that after eating here our first night of our week long trip I immediately hit up old yelp.com and managed to find some real restaurant gems for the rest of the trip. Didn't have another awful meal thank god. So I guess I do owe Santa Maria some gratitude for the other 6 days I was in St. Augustine... Avoid at all costs.

The locals all know what a joke this place is - it's in a beautiful spot and it's a shame that they don't take that seriously. There are people in the area that would kill to have that location. Instead, they serve bad food. The staff is good, and it's a credit to them knowing that they are serving overpriced seafood that is worse than what you get at a Long John Silvers for 3 times the price. Greasy, bland, cheap product. They have unique idea here that the kids really like. all around the outside wall at table height is a wooden shelf that is hinged and sectioned. If you open it and look down, you see the ocean and schools of fish. The idea is that you can dump your uneaten food over the side and watch the fish eat it. The kids love it! I have a word of advice - save some grief, and when your food comes to the table, just dump it over the side - don't bother eating it.

  • Gail W.

On recent visit, Saturday Jan 4th, with my daughter and two grandchildren we were served very substandard overpriced food. I ordered Caribbean chicken and redskinned mashed potatoes as sides. The potatoes arrived luke warm while the dish was very warm, obviously microwaved. I set them aside to bring to the attention of the waitress but she never returned to check on our table until she brought our check. She offered to replace them at that time but our party had completed our meal. I asked if she could remove the price of the sides from our check. The waitress returned and said the manager would not change the price of the entree but could remove the price of a side salad as compensation. No apology was made, no attempt to make certain I would come back and give them another chance to please. The following Monday, I decided to call and speak with the manager about this situation and was met with a gruff, non-hospitable gentleman on the phone who stood firmly behind his position and even stated that he figured I would not be returning anyway so why bother trying to engage and please a customer. Obviously this management attitude has infected the staff and kitchen. It is apparent this restuarant owner gets by with the novelty aspect of children being able to toss bread to fish and sea gulls tableside, a once and done activity. A little Southern hospitality would ensure a larger return crowd. We enjoy dining out but chose to do so in establishments rewarding our patronage with courtesy and quality food. We will not return.

Avoid at ALL COSTS. Seriously, there are plenty of restaurants in town to eat at. Avoid this frozen food trap. Locals DO NOT eat here - that should tell you something. Walk on by, walk into town, and pick nearly any other place and you would be better off.

My boyfriend and I ate here for our anniversary and it was delicious! I got the crab cakes and the two sides I picked were the loaded baked potato and green beans... It was soooooooo good! My boyfriend got chicken Parmesan and he was crazy about it too! They also bring you bread out on a tray which was very good! We had decent service, the waitress could have been a little more attentive. But as far as food food and location, it gets an A+ in my book!

I don't typically make it to St. Augustine, but based on a friends (I will reevaluate our "friendship") recommendation, I recently took a young lady there on a date. Initially, we walked in and the staff appeared to be very friendly...the restaurant was fairly empty, but it was late, and we didn't think anything of it. We were seated in the back, next to several other occupied tables. The view from our seat (over the water, watching sailboats pass) was beautiful...one might even say romantic. Here's where things went south. We noticed that there was no music playing, and that the restaurant was eerily quiet, besides of course, the sound of the rap music that was being played in the kitchen (I like Drake, but I might have preferred some 2Pac). We were "greeted" by a portly waitress, who seemed somewhat disappointed to see us. She did not smile...not ever...she stared blankly at us, and appeared to be judging us the entire time. She did appear to continuously stare at my date with disapproval, likely because she was intimidated by how much less attractive than my date she was. My date ordered an adult drink and specified no lime in it....naturally, there was a lime in it. Due to the awkwardness that was created by the stone faced waitress, I made several jokes in her presence, and for her benefit (HILARIOUS JOKES MAY I ADD). The waitress declined even a polite smile, (not even a titter...nothing) opting instead to stare straight ahead, into the distance, awkwardly. Our food came out in an acceptable amount of time, and it wasn't bad...MINE was actually fairly decent, but my date did not feel the same about her meal, and did not finish...(she said it was "okay", but I call bullsh*t on that...she also later playfully referenced the "awful" meal on Facebook, which confirmed my suspicion of her displeasure). We were relieved once the last patron in the restaurant besides us left, because it had been so quiet, that they could hear every single word we said....I have no doubt all of those people now know all of our most intimate details. (None of the patrons in the restaurant appeared to be overly pleased with the place...though they may have been somewhat entertained by our conversation, which was far and away the best thing that's likely ever occurred in this establishment.) I have had worse experiences in restaurants, and due to the fact that I didn't think the food was too bad, and my belief that the waitresses poor performance, appeared to have more to do with her personality disorder, than a bad attitude, I declined to speak to the manager. I was, after all, on a date, and I reeeeeeally didn't want to be "that guy". Several other tidbits: - I feel I overpaid for the, let's call it acceptable, food. - We were not asked if we wanted dessert (which we didn't, but irrelevant). - The bathroom was a proverbial train wreck. - All the other patrons looked like weirdos...not a classy crowd. The circumstances weren't horrible enough to ruin an otherwise wonderful date night, but the restaurant itself was a genuinely disappointing experience I will not likely return to this restaurant, nor will I recommend it to my friends. Be cautious ye who enter.

This place is a great place. It's an old family restaurant with a neat history.....their food is a good quality....and the service was really good. We sat out on the deck on a nice cool night and listened to a storm...she sat us in a corner back far enough that we could eat while the storm came in and not worry about getting wet. Albeit....they were a bit overpriced...but what do you expect? They have crablegs etc on the menu....and those things are never cheap. At the end of our meal....they gave us a basket of bread to feed a gigantic school of tame catfish off the dock.... Overall...this place really was worth the drive into town....and I'm not sure why people gave it such low ratings.....

Last renovation took place in 1964, and it shows. The fisherman theme consisted of dirty windows, outdated furniture, fishing nets and paraphernalia, and dozens of old glass chandeliers which adorned the the ceiling. If you have the choice, dine elsewhere. However, if you find yourself stuck in this tourist trap, the crab corn chowder might be your only saving grace. The fried fried green tomatoes and flatbreads weren't too bad either. Save the bread for the fish, which you can feed from your table. The shrimp and grits was big enough for three people, but not very tasty.

I will start with the positives. The Santa Maria lures you in with its appealing ocean setting. They provide stale bread to feed the gulls and fish, so it can be a lot of fun for children. Also, the service was friendly and timely. The bartender was all smiles even though we weren't ordering many alcoholic beverages. Now for the negative characteristics of the Santa Maria. First, the food was poor and very over-priced. My wife and I ordered the scallops and they tasted like they were frozen; they were tough, rubbery texture and dry. The order came with about 16 scallops. Quantity does not surpass quality especially with seafood. Additionally, the veggies were half cooked. Unfortunately, the only item that tasted decent was the hush puppies. Second, the place was not well maintained and more emphasis should be placed on overall cleanliness.

Chosen because of location on the water. Kids liked feeding the birds. Food is bland and nothing special at all. Drinks aren't that good either. Service was good though but not busy either.

The Santa Maria Restaurant is just over the water in St. Augustine. The novelty lies in the window "traps" which allow you to chuck food at fish through a tiny door which points down at the water. The concept is sort of interesting, but it didn't work for me so much. First, they bring you this bowl of stale, gross-looking and torn wonder-bread to throw down into the water and it accompanies you while you eat, unless you just want to throw the entire bowl into the water (which we eventually did in order to not have to look at it anymore). Of course, once we threw the bread into the water, no fish were visible. It did, however, summon about 8 skillion seagulls, therefore the rest of our meal was spent watching seagulls eat soggy bread and poo all over the water. Yum! Finally, the food was all frozen. Yucka!

DO NOT EAT HERE!!!! OK, so can you hear this..."THUMP THUMP THUMP"? That is the sound of me kicking myself for not reading any of the reviews before going here. UGGH! This place is HORRIBLE! Do I have to give stars? How about a can of gas and a match? This place needs to be destroyed before it kills someone! There is a reason why after 30+ years of visiting St. Augustine that I was never recommended to visit the Santa Maria. It looks so fun...but believe me, the draw of "a trap door to feed fish" while you are eating and the great location on the dock overlooking the water is the only thing this restaurant has going for it. Anyone who has recommended it is surely drunk, has burned off all of their tastebuds, has a stomach made of cast iron or is insane. Let me just say that all of the food here is inedible...except for the hush puppies. The service is terrible...I had the displeasure of Dot, the waitress who I believe is actually one of the dead people you meet on The Ghost Tour. Is she an apparition? Did I just get a ghost as a waitress??? No disrespect Dot, but I am quite certain that you should not be serving tables anymore. Perhaps you should have retired about 30 years ago when you turned 65. It's just not the job for the elderly. The calamari was frighteningly limp and tasteless. My daughter got catfish...until I pulled it away from her. One more child spared from a trip to the ER I think! The shrimp and grits reminds me of what it would taste like to cut up the soles of my sneakers and fry them, plop them on some instant grits and sprinkle with Velveeta and cajun spice. The rice that accompanied it reminded me of maggots...except they weren't moving. Salmon? No that can't be salmon...it looked like a grey hockey puck with some disgusting sauce that had a very large chunk at the bottom of the cup. What was it? I don't want to know...but the dried dill mixed with watery acidic sour cream at least killed it before it climbed out. The canned vegetable medley didn't help either. My son got chicken fingers and french fries...this, I must admit, was actually edible. Thank goodness both of those are pre-cooked before they re-fry them or I am sure we may have been whisking the little guy to the ER too. Dot forgot my salad...but charged me anyway. I am actually ok that I didn't have to deal with that either. I am not ok with paying over $20 a plate for the worst food I have ever witnessed. Thank heavens they served beer. I laughed when we got the bill and instead of complaining, respectfully paid and left, smiling that I made it out of there without throwing up or getting food poisoning. Thank You Santa Maria for your lovely Mother's Day gift...fond memories I will always cherish and never forget the day that I went to the world's most disgusting restaurant.

I think the Santa Maria needs to head back out to sea with the Nina and the Pinta. The placed looked interesting and cool... too bad the food was terrible. We ordered the grouper which was overcooked. It was flavorless as well... The worst part is that we spent so much money eating lousy. The best part of the meal were the chicken tenders I ordered my son. Great claim to fame for a seafood restaurant, huh?

Had the Parmesan chicken with penne pasta. Pretty good. It is sorta pricey. Best part is feeding the fish and birds. The birds and fish don't really care for lemons.

It was the last night of our vacation in 2012. My wife and I wanted to do something special for the group that traveled with us. We spent $197 for the meal. The food was cold and the fish was hard. The views were very nice, but the meal was lacking. The waitress brought me some fresh fish when I complained a little, but after we left, the rest of my party told me about the poor food quality. The waitress said the food was bad because they had a lot of patrons (the wait was about an hour long). Advice: Go there for the views and order an appetizer. Do not go there for a big meal. If you hit it at the wrong time, you will pay a lot for very little.

I recently had my third experience in five years eating here, as I visit on vacations. I see the poor reviews and let me say, if you're coming here for the food, you may be disappointed. Why four stars? Because kids love this place - feeding the fish is cool!!! Seeing the kids feed the fish with the old bread is a trip - everyone gets into it and it's hilarious. The live fish are probably keeping this place in business; along with the pigeons and sea gulls. I will say that the service is fantastic and has been consistently very very good; the servers are extremely attentive and patient with a large group and kids. Our server was extremely nice and hospitable - probably the best of any establishment our entire trip - I think her name was Stacy. I had the Alaskan snow crab legs which were fine; the hush puppies were good. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal; it's the novelty of the place, especially for kids, that makes this restaurant special.

To start off All the workers where really polite. We got our food quickly my fiance said we should get the fried green tomatoes for the appetizers and I definitely didn't like them. I love tomatoes by the way. Other than that the food was great. The only dislike I had is they should tell people to not feed the animals cause the birds got annoying they kept flying around and landing by us trying to get food. You can sit inside or outside if its a nice day I would suggest sitting outside.

I picked this restaurant based on its outside appearance (it is right on the water), and an advertisement I saw which promised "vegetarian and kids menus". As a vegetarian I felt duped to discover that there was basically only one vegetarian option, a creamy vegetable pasta. I asked my server and they said that the ad was old and didn't offer any other assistance. The inside of this restaurant is very old and run-down looking. The food was simply okay, and seemed a bit pricey. It is also telling that when we told our friends who live locally where we had eaten they instantly expressed disappointment that we had not asked them first so they could have warned us away.

Food was lackluster. Dont get the buffalo wrap. Burger was OK. Cool spot with a nice view but not worth waiting around in 95 degree weather for. Feeding the fish is cool and made my little girl's day but otherwise, order an app or two and let the kids have some fun and save room for dinner someplace nicer like Colombia or A1A Ale Works.

Had an excellent experience at Santa Maria. They had a vegetarian menu available, which was quite a nice surprise. I ordered a Cuban Bowl with pineapple, rice, sweet potatoes, and a plum sauce, great vegan dish! Enjoyed feeding the fishies through the little compartments you can open and close. While enjoying our meal we were greeted by 2 happy dolphins! Waitress was a doll and we were so pleased we even bought a t-shirt, definitely worth checking out.

Excellent location, you get a great view of the harbor while dining. Good entertainment value for the kids. They can feed the fish, pigeons and sea gulls. Although I was having flashbacks from "The Birds" when several started dive bombing the window. Food is OK. Typical fish shack fair. Buffalo shrimp and coconut shrimp were good, also like the hush puppies.

During our week-end in St-Augustine we decided to try this place out because it was on a pier out on the water. Where else could the views be better?! So we went and actually had a great time. The views were really nice: bay + bridge of lions. And one of the main attractions of the place is that you can feed the fish while eating. The waiters give you bread that you can drop into a slot and watch the fish (or seagulls) eat! FUN!! The food was good, not great. Prices reasonable.

Decent food at best but overpriced. The place smells musty and everything you touch is sticky or greasy. We ordered a carafe of sangria which was good but at $28 was not that good. Two of the three wineglasses that came with the sangria had to be returned because they had lipstick stains on them. You can do much better in St Aug.

If I could give it zero stars I would. I've had better frozen shrimp from Banquet frozen meals. First off I ordered a drink so that I could get to keep the glass for $2.00 more. After I had drank my drink I asked about the glass and they said they were out of them but I had asked them before ordering if they still did that and they said yes but you had to pay the before mentioned $2.00 in order to keep it. Then I proceed to order blackened scallops but I was told they were out of scallops. So I ordered the Banquet frozen shrimp. My wife ordered the Tilapia fish dinner and once again we have had frozen tilapia from Wal-Mart that tasted better than this stuff. My youngest Daughter ordered the Banquet chicken strips and my oldest ordered the Barbeque in a can. All tolled our meal came to $65.00 but we could have gotten better stuff from Wal-Mart or Publix for around $15.00. This has been my last meal at the Santa Maria and I would advise others to avoid going there in the future.

i'm a little torn about this restaurant because everything besides the food was really neat. the restaurant sits on stilts over the water, and there are port holes by the window that open up. the waiter gave us bread to feed the really aggressive swarm of catfish below. the views are nice, the wait staff is nice. however, the food is inedible and fairly pricy for what you get. my mother and i ordered the scallops. the food presentation is reminiscent of denny's or waffle house. everything came in little bowls on top of a main plate. two hush puppies were alright (i imagine that this place is capable of all things deep fried), beans and green beans were boiled and not noteworthy. the scallops were overcooked, rubbery and indigestible. i'm pretty sure that they were frozen prior to cooking.

My husband and I stopped in for a quick drink after an afternoon of strolling around St. Augustine. Just by looking at the joint we could tell the place relied on its location, and not its culinary reputation to stay in business. I had a seltzer and he had a Corona. He also ordered grilled alligator skewers which were fine, but at $9.95 were very expensive for two skewers. The place looks like it could use a thorough power washing. One star for the friendly bar service. One star for not getting food poisoning.

Mixed review - best view in St. Augustine's where you sit right on the water and watch the draw bridge and lights come on in town. Food average and a tad over priced reflecting the tourist attraction more than dining destination Kids will love it as the feed the birds at table through trap door on windows and handled our Gluten free requests very Must eat at if in town for view - other restaurants have better atmosphere and price/value

I don't know why this place has a such a low rating. I really enjoyed my visit here. My boyfriend and I had passed this place twice before deciding HEY we were in st augustine and we wanted to eat on the water, dammit! So we went in. It is literally ON the water. Not by it, not near it, but ON it. We were seated immediately on a Friday night at 630pm. We got a seat inside at one of the first tables on the right. The sun was setting and was glaring off the water. It was a bit much for my boyfriend and the blinds were stuck and wouldnt go down all the way, but we managed our way through dinner just fine. The claim of the restaurant is that you can "feed the fish." True enough, next to each table is a large window. If you look at the bottom there are 2 small door hatches that open up. You drop some bread down there for the fish to it. However, you can't see the fish and the pigeons will more than likely eat it first, but it is fun. If you can part with the complimentary multi-grain loaf they give you. Our waitresss was wonderful and very attentive. Everyone was very nice and warm to us. I ordered the gator burger (12.99) and my boyfriend got the coconut shrimp platter (18.99). Drinks were 2.50 each. Honest to god, I didn't know a gator burger could exist, much less taste extraordinary. I really loved it. It was blackened and a tad spicy. It came with crinkle cut fries and slaw, but i was too full to eat any of it. The burger wasn't bits of gator between breadcrumbs and filler, it was just pure tenderized gator tail. DELICIOUS. I wouldn't mind coming back and getting it again. The boyfriends dish came with about 7-10 coconut shrimp with sauce, 2 hushpuppies (out of this world good), and 2 sides. I thought this dish was a little overpriced, but for St Augustine, what do you expect. overall, I'll be coming back!

End rant. -A

Great restaurant, loved the server. Food was excellent even with the requested changes. Atmosphere and live music was perfect. Singer kept it at a low relaxing volume !

Ugh.... Don't come to this tourist trap. Good location completely wasted on bad food. You get to feed the fish while you eat but the fish have it easy, they just get thrown bread and don't get a check after.

    (1)
  • Mike W.

Yucka!
